Olympic N.P. - Ruby Beach
On a very foggy, windy morning we hike to Ruby Beach. The access to Ruby Beach was closed for construction so we parked four miles south and hiked in. We were rewarded with a beautiful morning and Ruby Beach to ourselves.

You join us on the first day of our family trip to Olympia National Park. Today we make an early morning low tide hike on Rialto Beach to Hole-in-the-Wall and back. What a great way to start the day and the trip. Natural beauty surrounds us from the edge of the ocean to the edge of the forest. Giant intricate rock formations and huge pieces of driftwood accent the beach. At low tide, tide pools...

Auto body repair tech here, I would have put a sheet on the inside first and let it dry so you'd have something to back the outside against for support.

Amazing job. Quick question: what fastening system did you use for the deck loops? There is a lot of information about how to do it in plastic kayaks but no info on fiberglass ones.

Really enjoyed this video. Very helpful as I consider a similar first repair that will also be my first time working with fiberglass. I appreciated hearing the back story. Hate the pain of loosing great photo/video memories Go again with the “new” yak and recapture it to share with us !! Great Kaye’s back style Would have liked more how instruction on laying on the resin and glass but your example is great. Love the out come Love the chickens Not totally sure what I thought of the music though it was fun. ;-) Hope you’ve had a blast in your good looking yak!

Do you know how this repair lasted? I'd love to try polyester resin and bondo for kayak and canoe repairs but in most caes I've been told to avoid it and use epoxy to avoid it cracking later. Polyester and bondo would save a lot of time.

Hi Mitch, not sure about the amounts. I would actually recommend a different method at this point. Something more durable will hold up better. I’m no expert, but from what I hear gel coat is a better way to go. Hope that helps.

Mate that looks pretty good. I have just started experimenting with kayak repair myself. Since this was made 3 years ago can you tell me how the paint has held up? I have always shied away from painting over the gel coat. I have always re-applied gel coat, which is a lot harder than painting and you dont always get a uniform colour. You restore looks pretty schmick (mean stylish in Australian), so if the paint holds up to salt water then I may look at it in the future.

I refurbished a kevlar/fibreglass bottom kayak this past fall. (20 years old) The hull was pretty banged up, soft in sections with long scars you could push in along with an actual hole that did not penetrate the cloth webbing. One thing about fibreglass is that it is infinitely repairable. I used that clear hard glass you see on wooden tables encased in what appears as a hard clear acrylic-- super strong and durable but, I probably added a good extra pound in weight. The saving grace was the kevlar top which was scared with scratches and looking tired and dull. I experimented with a heat gun and a car buffer with compound on one of the hatches and it came out looking brand new. The kayak looks fabulous now and the repairs are holding up. Originally refurbished for resale-- I'm not selling it now.

Hey guys, I'm enjoying the videos and commentaries! I rode westbound in late June in the middle of the storms and floods. If by any chance the cross country rider had an old 10 speed with a blue front rim. He's a friend that I started riding with in NY. He was about 10 to 14 days in front of me at that point. If that's who you were talking about in the video he definitely made it to the Pacific. Got to get back to the video binge and see how it ended.
